The County - Ol' Doc Stone
Character Profile
Ol’ Doc Stone is the heart and soul of The County — a man known not just for his intelligence, but for his kindness, humour, and the way he makes everyone feel welcome.
In his younger years, Doc had a wild streak, the kind that led him to win The Watering Hole in a poker game — a place he’s called home ever since. He lives above the bar, in one of two small apartments, with Hank McCoy in the other. Over time, the bar became more than a business — it became a beacon. With the porch light always on, even during the day, people travel country roads just to find it… and him.
Doc is the man people turn to — for advice, for perspective, or simply to be heard. He listens without judgment, offering wisdom shaped by both experience and loss.
He lost his wife, Martha, who “died on the sixth of June,” many years ago — a phrase that lingers like a lyric in his life. Every year on that day, Doc pulls out his old 78s of Delta Blues and allows himself the only night he drinks.
Though he rarely speaks of it, Doc had one brief relationship after Martha’s passing — with Mary Dunn — a connection that led to the birth of his son, Jimmy Dunn. It’s a truth he carries quietly, known only to him and Mary.
Doc once spent a night at his cousin’s place on the Big River, but couldn’t sleep. Later, he realized it was the sound of the waves — just different enough from home to unsettle him. That’s when he understood: some people don’t just belong to a place — they’re part of it.
