- Nights Like These

S1:E3 The County

Jimmy bumps into Doc at the Watering Hole and receives great advice about life.

The Story Behind The Song

Nights Like These — Steel McCreery

Nights Like These is a story-driven country song about a troubled young man searching for something he can’t quite name—and finding it where he least expects it.

Told through Jimmy Dunn, the song follows him back to The Watering Hole for the second time in a week. He’s not even sure why he came back… just that something pulled him there. Life’s been heavy, things at home aren’t right, and for a while, a few drinks feel like the easiest way to quiet it all.

But this night turns into something more.

Jimmy finds himself sitting across from Ol’ Doc Stone, a man he’s known since he was a boy—and a man known around The County for quietly guiding those who need it most.

For reasons he can’t explain, Jimmy opens up. Really opens up. And Doc listens.

What follows isn’t loud or dramatic—just steady, honest words from a man who’s lived enough life to know what matters. The kind of advice that doesn’t hit all at once… but stays with you forever.

In a rare moment of emotion, Doc slips—and calls Jimmy “son.”

It hangs there for a second… unnoticed by Jimmy, but not by Doc.

Because somewhere deep down, Doc can’t help but wonder if that word came from a place he’s spent a lifetime avoiding—back to a long-ago moment with Mary Dunn, and a question he’s never answered.

Before the night ends, Doc leaves Jimmy with something simple, but lasting:

“Hug your kids a little tighter.”

Not as advice—but as something he wishes he’d done himself.

Because on nights like these…
the right words, from the right person, can change everything.

Nights Like These Lyrics

Story Board

Verse 1

I was walking through the beach bar,

Bumped into this well-worn man,

He saw the stress there on my face

Tossed me a beer from a callused hand.

Verse 2

He said, “Son, the first one’s on me,”

And smiled from the corners of his eyes,

His stories drifted on for hours,

His advice was old and wise.

Chorus

He said let your worries wander,

Let them drift into the breeze,

Hug your kids a little tighter

And raise a glass to nights like these.

Verse 3

Another round or two or three,

He listened like an old friend,

I told him all my problems,

And he told me once again.

Chorus

He said let your worries wander,

Let them drift into the breeze,

Hug your kids a little tighter

And raise a glass to nights like these.

Verse 4

We traded stories ’til closing time,

He said he had somewhere to go,

He smiled and patted me on the back,

Said son, there’s a few things you Oughta know.

Final Chorus

He said let your worries wander,

Let them drift into the breeze,

Hug your kids a little tighter

And raise a glass to nights like these.
